The Marion Chamber’s Leadership In Action (MLIA) class, looking to make an impact on current city needs, would like to share with you the “Reach Higher” Peace Tree. Over the past several years, MLIA classes have raised funds to go towards community beautification projects (like banners and light displays for light poles and a new community peace tree) throughout Marion. These projects are helping Marion Reach Higher!
The 2023-2024 class is excited to keep the momentum going by building upon the work of our previous classes by helping “grow” the Peace Tree in Marion Square Park! Contributions toward this project will be taken to the Marion City Council to request matching funds to aid our goal of making our current tree larger coming in at 46-feet tall with a 4-foot drum base. There is nothing like our Peace Tree in neighboring communities, and by expanding our tree upward, we not only will be honoring our past traditions, but we will continue to look onward and upward toward our future.

The new 30-foot Peace Tree debuted last year at Christmas in the Park. The magical display provided vibrancy and holiday cheer for residents and visitors and NOW we have the opportunity to build on this fun Marion tradition by adding a drum tree skirt which will add 4 feet of height to the tree- the perfect way to Reach Higher this holiday season!” |

Marion’s Peace Tree was a gift to the City in the 90s during the first Gulf War. It was planted in the park as a symbol of the bright wish for a more peaceful world for our children and grandchildren, and in memory of lives lost. The planted tree in City Square Park was lit each holiday season. The many lights symbolized those bright wishes for Peace on Earth. In 1993 when the Christmas in the Park event began, the tree lighting became part of that event each year. Unfortunately, the tree was lost to disease and damage and is no longer standing
